A sagging door is an annoying problem. It scrapes the floor, sticks against the jamb, or refuses to latch shut. Over time, daily use pulls the hinges loose. Fortunately, you can solve this issue quickly with basic tools.
Start by inspecting the top hinge. Loose screws cause the door to tilt downward. Grab a screwdriver and tighten every screw on both the door and the frame. If the screws spin without gripping, the screw holes are stripped out. You can easily fix this by swapping the factory screws for three-inch wood screws. These longer screws bite deep into the wall stud behind the jamb and pull the door back into alignment.
If tightening does not work, you may need to shim the bottom hinge. Loosen the hinge plate and slide a thin piece of cardboard or plastic behind it. This pushes the bottom of the door out and levels the top corner away from the frame.
