How to Tie a Bow Tie: Easy Step-by-Step Guide

Learning how to tie a bow tie looks harder than it actually is. Many men avoid self-tie bow ties because they worry about getting the shape wrong. But once you understand the basic mechanics, it feels just like tying your shoes.

Start by draping the tie around your neck. Adjust it so one side sits about an inch and a half lower than the other. Cross the longer end over the shorter end, then bring it up through the neck loop. Pull it snug to form a secure base.

Next, fold the shorter hanging end horizontally. This forms the front wing of your bow. Bring the longer piece straight down over the middle of this shape. Pinch the two sides of the front wing together in front of the drop piece.

Look behind the folded wing to find the small loop near your collar. Push the middle of the dangling end through that loop to create the back wing. Gently pull the folded loops on opposite sides to tighten the knot.
